Gothic Font Generator
Turn your words into blackletter: the sharp, medieval gothic lettering behind old English tattoos, metal logos and dark fantasy art.
What is gothic text?
A gothic font generator converts text into Unicode blackletter characters (fraktur), the dense, angular medieval script often called old English lettering, as plain copyable text.
How the Gothic Font Generator works
Blackletter was the everyday handwriting of medieval Europe and the typeface of the first printed books, including Gutenberg's Bible. Its letters are built from thick vertical strokes and sharp diamond-shaped feet, packed tightly together, which is why a line of it looks like a woven fence of ink. The Unicode version is called fraktur, after the most famous blackletter family, and this generator maps your letters onto it.
Two weights are here because they behave differently in the wild. Standard Fraktur is ornate and authentic, with a few capitals (like the famous ๐ and โญ) that look quite different from their modern shapes. Bold Fraktur is heavier and stays readable at smaller sizes, which is why it is the practical choice for usernames and titles. Both are genuine text, so your gothic lettering pastes into bios, posts and design tools instead of living only inside an image.
Gothic text styles in this generator
- Fraktur: Authentic blackletter (fraktur). Medieval, dense and unmistakable.
- Bold Fraktur: Blackletter with heavier strokes. Reads better at small sizes.
- Bold Script: Thick brush-style script. The most popular cursive look for names.
- Bold: Mathematical bold with matching bold digits. Strong and simple.
- Double Struck: Outline double-struck letters, the blackboard style from mathematics.

Gothic text FAQs
Is gothic the same as old English lettering?
Yes, in everyday use the names overlap. Old English usually refers to the blackletter style used by newspapers like The New York Times masthead and in tattoos. The Unicode set used here is fraktur, a close cousin from the same blackletter family, and it produces the look people mean by both names.
Why do some capital letters look so different?
Blackletter capitals are genuinely elaborate: the fraktur A, C, H, I, M, R and Z follow medieval forms that predate modern letter shapes. If a capital matters for a name, check it in Bold Fraktur, where the shapes read more clearly.
Can I use gothic text for a tattoo design?
Use it as a style reference to show your artist, exactly like the Tattoo Font Generator. The artist redraws the lettering for skin, adjusting spacing and stroke weight so it ages well.
Does gothic text work in game names?
Often yes, since these are standard Unicode letters. Some games restrict names to plain A-Z and will flatten or reject them, and a few render fraktur as boxes on old clients.
Is blackletter hard to read?
Long passages are, which is traditional: even medieval readers found dense blackletter slow going. Use it for names, titles and short phrases where the texture is the point, and keep sentences in a normal style.
