What is Zalgo text?
Zalgo text is text corrupted by stacking Unicode combining marks in all directions until the letters drown in them, a style born in mid-2000s forum culture and named after a creepypasta figure.
How the Zalgo Text Generator works
Zalgo text is built from combining diacritical marks, the small strokes Unicode provides for accents. Three families matter: marks that sit above the letter, marks that strike through the middle, and marks that hang below. Stack a random handful from each family onto every character and the column of marks grows far beyond the line, dragging visual noise into the text above and below. That overflow is the signature Zalgo look: the corruption refuses to stay in its own line.
The style spread from Something Awful forums in the mid-2000s, attached to a creepypasta character whose name became the genre's name. The intensity control on this page approximates the three eras of the style: light corruption is early, readable Zalgo; medium is the classic forum density; heavy is the full modern deep-fried version where the base text nearly disappears. All of it is still plain Unicode text, so it pastes into posts and messages as-is.

Who is Zalgo?
Zalgo is a fictional entity from a creepypasta that spread on forums in the mid-2000s, usually described as an eyeless, many-mouthed being whose arrival corrupts whatever text mentions him. The corrupted text style took his name and outlived the original story.
How is Zalgo different from regular glitch text?
Glitch text aims for a broken-screen look and stays fairly readable. Zalgo pushes combining marks in every direction at once, above, through and below the letters, which makes it taller, denser and much harder to read. It is glitch text with the restraint removed.
Why does Zalgo text mess up the lines around it?
The stacked marks are rendered as part of the character's column, and apps draw the whole column even when it is far taller than the line. The text visually invades neighbouring lines, which is a rendering overlap, not actual damage to other text.
Can I get banned for a Zalgo username?
Some platforms restrict names with excessive combining marks because they overlap other interface elements. It is a formatting rule, not a content ban. If a name is rejected, lower the intensity and try again.
How do I clean Zalgo text back to normal?
The base letters are unchanged underneath. Paste the text into any tool that removes diacritics, or into the converter here and choose a plain reading: the marks are separate characters and strip away cleanly.
